Poem by popular poet

Samuel Hoffenstein

Progress

They’ll soon be flying to Mars, I hear-
But how do you open a bottle of beer?

I flash will take you from Nome to New York-
But how the hell do you pull a cork?

They’ll rocketeer you to Hibernia-
But open a window and get a hernia.

They’ve stripped space from the wind’w blue-
But where’s a lace that fits a shoe?

Where is the key that fits the lock?
Where is a garter that fits a sock?

They’ll hop to the moon and skip to the stars,
But what’ll stay put is the lids to jars.

The mighty telescope looks far,
But finds no place to park a car.

The world crackles with cosmic minds
Tangled up in Venetian blinds.

One day they’ll resurrect the dead,
Who’ll die again of colds of the head.

Glossies and Papers- A critical eye

Where’s the detailing?
Bearable inside?
Tyvek
Klober
Before Sisal paper.
No worrying then about making a mack from them.
Thorough construction and building surveying necessary to sweeten the deal.
There’s work enough without the marvel of technology.
Need here has been spotted and thought important,
What else might have been missed?
Excuse me- in my career I drew and specified,
Whether well or not I’m not sure,
But I did.
Picking up the habits and intuition.
I remember my own jewel box.

Rubbish and Anarchists

How much rubbish have you got?
Can you surcharge your wheelie bin in 6 months of rubbish collection?
Couple of trips to the corporation tip?
Think of it in cubic feet and bank or crushing it down
In a skip
Let’s hope it can’t catch fire the kids round here like a good burn
Ideas from November gone and Bonfire Night
They might haul it out to set it alight
Hasn’t rained for weeks
Pyromaniacs.

Poetic Prose- based on Edward Lear

May 2014 (c) Miles Whinfrey
Edward Lear’s The Quangle Wangle’s Hat

Grand Designs does Lear

See how the Quangle Wangle shares his sheltered treetop home?
A house or home up in a tree- A Crumpetty Tree
Enormous mighty tree as if from a dinosaur era
And probably quite apart from other trees

He is quite unhinged- a risk taker
The edifice is a giganticist thing
Intelligent though to think in such an abstract way
Wow.

A special Hat, something substantial-source of pride
Boater- like a jewel box and shaped handsomely as well
Made a great parcel of space
Room enough- and a blank canvass

An Avian couple and 15 others of various species petitioned
Some on the brim, some on top, box sides for walls with
the decoration, a trap door
While the Quangle Wangle lives on a gondola beneath
A ladder, or rope ladder to the floor

And what a time to be had
The excitement is palpable amongst the group
This is how to live
In the perfect spot, in the Crumpetty Tree, in the Quangle Wangle
Quee’s lovely Hat

They’ll be music all will dance during night-time party
Decked out in celebratory festoons of cotton buds
on limbs and branches and fireflies in old fashioned jars- and
maybe some honey.
Extra rope giving them a swing with a seat made from old roots
More Jam and Jelly than usual

The impressive blue baboon’s flute picking out a spirited tune
in a reel that goes on and on
Tread lightly on the foliage that forms the floor- leaf fall
collected for subsequent home improvements
After sore heads and weak legs
All have settled In- a likeminded community.

I’ve been concentrating for what seems a long time
Think I’ve had enough
Voices go up in amusement and surprise
Who’s at the bottom of this?
It’s Guru Dansak
Is it wrong to listen to him speak his mission and mantras?
Money means nothing to him
As soon as he came he will go
We shall not see his like for some time

Poem by a favourite: Love and life

Noel Coward 1920’s

Poor Little Rich Girl

You’re only
A baby,
You’re lonely,
And maybe
Some day soon you’ll know
The tears
You are tasting
Are years
You are wasting,
Life’s a bitter foe,
With fate it’s no use competing,
Youth is so terribly fleeting;
By dancing
Much faster,
You’re chancing
Disaster,
Time alone will show.

Poor little rich girl,
You’re a bewitching girl,
Better beware!
Laughing at danger,
Virtue a stranger,
Better take care!
The life you lead sets all your nerves a-jangle,
Your love affairs are in a hopeless tangle,
Though you’re a child, dear,
Your life’s a wild typhoon,
In lives of leisure
The craze for pleasure
Steadily grows.
Cocktails and laughter,
But what comes after?
Nobody knows.
You’re weaving love into a mad jazz pattern,
Ruled by Pantaloon.
Poor little rich girl, don’t drop a stitch too soon.

Advanced Manual TM: Progress Hereto and family interruptions

Guess what? I had family from Italy this last week starting the 24th May. The Cousin (or second cousin) stayed with my uncle for a week but we were entertaining quite a lot and although it was great it ended up effecting my speech preparation. Moved speech from June 2nd to June 30th as a result. And I wonder if NLP is a bit sensationalist and contraversial for my toastmasters audience- I think it is. Therefore I might revert to the backup of doing a speech on ‘How to Make Whisky’ which was always more or less in the frame. More writing and slide production to do but it might be interesting so theres no problem with that. Cheers everyone…

FOOTBALL’S APOGEE

Miles Whinfrey (c) May 2014.

It’s everyone’s dream
Running out every Saturday to master things for us
We live vicariously
Today I’m in London
We were strangers at 9.45
But it is now 2 and we are a core unit for the struggle
We tell stories and chat for the duration
None with an ideal life
But we have a happy place to go to
He says he is dreading the trip back should we lose
Now it is time- they go to entrance J and I to Club Wembley
I feel like my first day at school
Inside it is like a cauldron
I am dumbstruck
It begins
The place is alive and 45 minutes pass in the blink of an eye
0-0
Second half
I remonstrate and bellow
Things are shaping up
It falters
1-0 QPR
Was it inevitable?
There is a crazy race to restore parity
There is no change in score
Some disappointment
A spectacle and great day-out for all fans

I know all the failures and I have decided to keep them
together in the same place where I now add this football game
I keep them to fascinate over them
And to consider why they affect me
My own missions have taught me that nothing is preordained
or perfect- and that some undertakings are always blighted

Heroic failure is acceptable to me today, none the less I resolve
to chase every cause in my life
They were as good as their word and I am proud.

Advanced Manual progress to date

Hi there. I am going to try to do a speech from each manual at a time alternating between the 2. I am also going to speak at Robin Hood Speakers at least twice for advanced manual bronze ( the maximum I can do without breaking the rules and so being stopped from doing so). I have speeches 1 and 2 pretty much planned and all I have to do is write them up. So there are only 8 left and I am determined to expedite this process so that I can sign up for Post Graduate Diploma in PM. I think I’m going to need a placement to learn the PM skills in the workplace so there is that to do too. Plus I want to join the Institute of Directors as a student member. But you can rest assured I will have a great summer before going back to being a lowly student.
